Big Island

The Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u Beach Park. The weather was quite windy, but we saw what we came to see.....soft black sand. There is also a green sand beach, but you have to hike 2 miles to get there, so that was out of the question!

Pele's flower. Taken by Ella. We have a little photographer in our midst.
This was amazing at the end of the "Chain of Craters Rd." We weren't able to see any flowing lava because you have to hike over old lava to get there and didn't feel it was safe for the kids, but we do plan on going back to see it before we leave!

Lava formation.

Pele the volcano goddess' flower. Legend goes if you pick this flower it will rain....someone must of picked it twice while we were there.

Kilauea Crater, right next to our camp we stayed at.

The plants and flowers were beautiful and I loved the shape of this leaf...looks like a heart.

  1. Wow these are some great pictures! Ella always did take great pictures and seems like she still is. That is a perfect picture of the flower. I wish we could come see ya'll. I'm having grandbabies withdrawl symptoms again. I love the black sand. It looks so cool!
